Josh and I decided to throw a murder mystery dinner for our double birthday party! Planning this was a lot more complicated than I was expecting, but it was TOTALLY worth it because it was so much fun!! =)
TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR OWN MURDER MYSTERY PARTY!
PICKING THE RIGHT COMPANY:
I looked at a few different murder mystery packages online. A lot of them are available for instant download which made planning super convenient. I decided to go with Night of Mystery because they had the most variety for themes and I really liked the fact that it wasn’t scripted.
Instead guests were given a list of objectives to complete in the beginning of the night, and a list of objectives to complete at the end of the night, after the murder occurs.
PICKING THE RIGHT THEME:
There were so many themes to choose from! I picked “Murder at the Juice Joint” because I thought it would be the most fun to dress up for. Some themes were only available if you had a specific number of people available to play.
SENDING OUT INVITES:
The murder mystery company provided invites but we decided to design our own.
The HARDEST part of planning a murder mystery party is NAILING DOWN THE GUEST LIST.
It is next to impossible to coordinate with everyone and make sure they arrive ON TIME. Every time one of our guests informed us they wouldn’t be able to make it, we had to reassign ALL THE CHARACTERS, which made things a little complicated.
PICKING THE RIGHT VENUE
We decided to rent an airbnb in the area that would have all the amenities we needed for our party. There were a lot of really cute options that went perfectly with our theme, I definitely recommend doing this!
PICKING THE RIGHT COSTUME
Most of our guests, purchased their costumes for pretty cheap on Amazon.
I loved how everyone’s looks outfits turned out!
I was pleasantly surprised at everyone’s willingness to get in character. I thoroughly enjoyed all the crazy over the top acting!
We had the murder happen during dinner and a cocktail hour to perform the first set of objectives. It worked out perfectly!
