For as long as I can remember, I have always strived for long hair. Mainly because 1) it made it easier to hide my face and 2) years and years of people telling me I just can’t pull off short hair- my face is too round, my cheeks are too chubby etc. etc.
It’s not that I’ve never cut my hair short, but every time I did, I ended up HATING it and telling myself I should have listened to everyone’s advice because I CAN’T PULL IT OFF!
A few months ago, with a hopeful heart, I decided to try again and this time I can honestly say, I FINALLY LOVE MY SHORT HAIR.
As embarrassing as it is to admit this, it has been a long and emotional journey for me to get to this level of confidence. And honestly, my short-hair-phobia had less to do with hair and more to do with an overwhelming insecurity with my physical appearance. Having short hair means I can’t hide my face and it turns out that’s not such a terrible thing after all.
HOW I FINALLY GOT THE HAIR CUT THAT WAS PERFECT FOR ME!
STEP ONE: Find the right reference picture
This might seem like common sense, but try and find a celebrity or person who has a look and face shape that is similar to yours. I used to pick out random haircuts I liked on other people, but they never looked good on me. Not every person’s hair can be used as inspiration, not every hair style translates well.
My hair muse is Selena Gomez, i.e. someone who has CHEEKS and SHORT HAIR and looks fab!
STEP TWO: Do your research
I spent a lot of time looking for the right hairstylist and the right salon. I wanted someone who really specialized in haircutting and not just coloring. I read reviews, looked at pictures and definitely kept price in mind cuz, ya girl is ballin’ on a budget!!
ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE PICKY!
STEP THREE: Learn to style your new hair
upkeep and maintenance for short hair can be a challenge, but it’s not so bad once you figure out what products work best for you.
I run Oribe styling creme throughout my wet hair before blow drying.
After my hair is dry I apply R&Co dry shampoo paste to my roots to give it that extra lift!
And of course, I gotta use my FAVORITE PRODUCT EVER, Bumble and Bumble (un)dressing creme for my flyaways. Baby hairs are NOT THE BUSINESS.
P.S. I really do love it and by it, I guess I mean me.
